The Impact Engine: An AI Powered Problem Solving Experiment for Local Economic Transformation

Artificial intelligence is currently surrounded by a massive amount of noise. Every day, we are bombarded with promises of how algorithms will effortlessly rewrite our future. But if we only focus on the hype, we miss the point. AI is not a magic wand, it is a tool we can wield, if we work hard to become adept. Its true value lies not in what it can do in theory, but in how we choose to apply it to the messy, real-world struggles of our daily lives.
To move past the chatter and start building, our AI Lab recently hosted The Impact Engine, a hackathon designed to push our interns, staff, and community beyond passive consumption and into active, ground-up creation. Our mission was simple: bypass the theoretical, pick a real struggle, and build an AI-powered solution to solve it.
Falling in Love with the Problem First
The foundation of any great innovation is never the technology itself, it is the problem. Participants were asked a fundamental question: What is the “nail in your side,” or, the problem you simply cannot let go of?
To build solutions that actually matter, we have to care enough about a challenge to want to solve it deeply. They broke down traditional barriers by forming teams randomly, bringing together diverse perspectives to tackle systemic economic, social, and environmental issues.
Once the teams identified their target struggles, they didn’t just rely on standard AI prompts. They were pushed to refine their concepts using the SCAMPER framework:
Substitute elements or steps.
Combine AI with other tools, products, or ideas.
Adapt existing software concepts to entirely new social contexts.
Modify or magnify the value of their solutions.
Put the technology to another use entirely.
Eliminate friction points and unnecessary steps.
Reverse or rearrange traditional workflows.
This structured friction forced teams to think past the obvious. Instead of building another generic chatbot, they had to engineer targeted, useful tools.
Coding the Vibe and Breaking the Build
When it was time to build, they bypassed the traditional, slow developmental roadblocks. Using modern, high-speed platforms, teams jumped straight into “Vibe Coding,” using natural language and rapid prototyping tools to bring their Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) to life in hours (and some cases, in minutes).
But a prototype is only as good as its durability. To ensure these creations could survive the real world, we initiated a peer-review process called “Red Teaming.” Teams swapped their MVPs with rival groups whose sole objective was to aggressively test, stress, and try to break the applications. This instant, constructive feedback stripped away any lingering assumptions, forcing builders to address actual user friction on the spot.
The Show and Tell: Innovation in Action
The culmination of this intense sprint was our “Tell-Me-A-Tale” showcase, where teams took the stage to share the stories behind their creations. So instead of just pitching features, they demonstrated how their tools actively push back against real struggles.
Of all the brilliant ideas that emerged, one standout solution from the next day’s show-and-tell perfectly illustrated what happens when you combine clear human empathy with practical AI execution:

Through relevant solutions like The Plain Web, the Impact Engine proved that the future of technology does not belong solely to elite engineers or massive tech conglomerates. It proved that it belongs to anyone willing to look closely at a community struggle and use the tools at hand to fix it.
We don’t need more passive observers of the AI revolution. We need builders, thinkers, and problem solvers. Let’s keep moving beyond the hype, focusing on the problems worth solving, and using technology to build things that have never been built before.
